EEL opens island center
Exhibits feature five habitats
The Barrier Island center, the latest project by the Environmentally Endangered Lands program, is open.
"The entire process for the exhibits took about two years from concept to right now," said Ray Mojica, south beach region land manager for the EEL program.
The central exhibit highlights five habitats from the Indian River Lagoon to the Atlantic Ocean, all of which are found on a 1-mile loop hike on the 30-acre property with interpretive panels, Mojica said.
The habitats, shown in detailed panels painted by Dawn Witherington of Floridana Beach, include the sub-tidal lagoon, inter-tidal lagoon, maritime hammock, coastal strand and the near-shore ocean.
"The rest of the center is sea turtle-related," Mojica said.
One interactive exhibit expected to be a big hit with kids is an industrial scale where they can compare their weight with various sea creatures, he said.
"They'll be able to see how many kids it takes to equal a manatee or bull shark," he said.
"The planning for this started in January 2003 so it almost seems unreal that it's coming to a conclusion. Exciting is an understatement," Mojica said.
He said the exhibits exceeded the staff's expectations.
The facility also features a gift shop, classroom and an auditorium, as well as EEL offices.
On site for the installation of the exhibits is Lori Gross, executive director of Creative Education.
"I think the exhibits look beautiful and work very well in the building and the artwork is fantastic," Gross said. "Every project we do is unique and custom. We've done other projects like this, but nothing on this scale."
Checking out one of the exhibits being installed at the Barrier Island center in Melbourne Beach is Ray Mojica, south beach region land manager for the Environmentally Endangered Lands program. The exhibits feature murals painted by Dawn Witherington.
